There were aspects of himself, whether they were physical or psychological, that he hated. He thought they were weak, they were ugly... scars. He did everything he could to hide them from everyone else. He didn't realise that in reality they were what sometimes made him strong, that they were often what people found beautiful in him. They were just imperfections that we all have, things that grounded him, manifestations that he had survived. They were what made him who he was.
